    EJ Chen – “I do”
-The words “I do” always make me think of the vows in the context of marriage. This song is ultimately a chill indie pop track that helps the listener contemplate commitment and the end of a relationship, one that decidedly did not end up in marriage. There’s a soaring vocal on the chorus that repeats the titular lyric, “I do…” It’s a rather self aware track about the complexity of commitment and identity. There’s a crispy contemporary production style here that makes it feel urban and distinctly modern. I’m sure it will find a resonance with a lot of fans of indie pop that’s a bit off the beaten path (in a good way). Chen is a talented artist and deserves widespread sharing.

    Jaeyla – “masquerader”
-There’s a unique vibe to this track that feels like it brings together elements of early 90s alt rock with the contemporary production styles of the 21st century. There’s also an intriguing effect on the vocal that reminds me a bit of Chappell Roan. The whole sound captures the raw emotions of the vocals, which comes through in the almost-desperate nature of the lyrics. It’s a commentary on someone who covers up their identity so much so that you can’t really know them at all. It’s a strong accusation, but one that seems to be evident in the subject of the track. The dynamic indie rock elements on the chorus make the song feel like it really takes off. There’s a beautiful layering of the electronic elements to create a big time pop sound that would be very much suited for the current top 40. I see no reason why it shouldn’t make its way there.

    EMELINE – “Emotional Virgin”
-Right from the start, I was impressed by this track. It’s got an intriguing title, to say the least. But the more you listen, the more you realize this isn’t just a danceable indie pop track… it’s a song built in the legacy of artists like David Bowie and Madonna. There are some powerful synths that are there for more than drama; the sound is created to convey the emotions of the moment. There’s a sincerity to these lyrics that reminds me of what I love about folk music and it’s so rare in a danceable groove like this. Lyrically, this is a track ultimately about finding that partner who can make you truly feel scene and understood. This is about more than just hooking up, but rather finding that person who becomes a partner in every sense of the word. It’s a challenging sentiment, but the bouncy pop energy makes the message go down smooth. EMELINE’s vocal, as always, is elite. This one was an unexpected treat.
