Three new tracks that will have you wondering what year it is… rock music for old souls – Ear To The Ground Music

Field Trip – “Shaping Up”
-I’m not exactly sure how many genres are blended here, but it’s a healthy dose of psych rock with some indie pop elements. It feels familiar and timeless in a lot of ways. I really like the way the vocal feels delicate in some places while taking off with more strength in other sections. The combination is a colorful rock dynamic that has flavors of 60s psychedelia blended with more recent indie pop production aspects. It’s a unique track and you’d be hard pressed to find anything else like it in music today. I can’t help but “see colors” when listening to this music… and yes, I’m completely sober. It’s just the kind of music that makes you feel that way.

Midnight ‘Til Morning – “Bye”
-There’s a bright, bouncy piano part in the opening of this song that provides a basis for the impassioned vocal work. There’s a style here that reminds me of early 2000s pop in the best way possible. I’m not sure how much of this is real vocal blending and how much is digitally created, nevertheless it’s a rewarding listen. The vocalists sure do a great job of passing the lead back and forth through the song. I wasn’t a huge fan of the “boy band” craze in the late 90s and early 2000s, but this has that flavor of powerful pop to it in some places. I just have to say that a heartfelt heartbreak song is always worth a share and when one does it with this kind of emotional dynamism with incredible harmonies… well, that’s an easy YES for me.

The Frowns – “As of Late”
-This is probably a little more straightforward rock than readers might expect, but that’s precisely what I like about the song and why I wanted to feature it. I appreciate the forward momentum of the percussive style. The vocal has this powerful quality to it that keeps it strong and supported through the verses then really takes off on the chorus. Each lyrical line comes through with a real sense of conviction, “as of late he talks more than he listens.” This is not a brag; it’s a statement of someone who is out of line. I’m not sure the story behind this track, but I can feel how real it is and how genuine these lyrics are. Also, I love how it feels like timeless rock n’ roll music, with expressions of joy and angst coming in with equal magnitude.
