Taylor Sheridan’s reign as Paramount+’s franchise machine has rarely faltered, but one of his more divisive series is suddenly showing signs of wear. Landman, which debuted last year to strong viewership and critical praise, has now dropped out of the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 ahead of its hotly anticipated second season.

According to FlixPatrol, Landman was holding steady at No. 5 as recently as September 30, trailing behind fellow Sheridan hit Tulsa King and the freshly wrapped Dexter: Resurrection. Globally, Sheridan still dominates with Yellowstone and Lioness continuing to chart, but domestically, the oil boom drama has lost some steam and fallen out of the top 10.

But that’s not to say the show hasn’t been a huge hit or anything. Starring Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, an oil landman (hey, that’s the name of the show) navigating Texas during a particularly lucrative oil boom, Landman became one of Paramount+’s biggest surprises of 2024. Its first season balanced the personal with the political, exposing the cost of fortune-hunting in West Texas while the show rested on the shoulders of a weary Thornton. Ali Larter and Michelle Randolph rounded out a cast with their high-energy shenanigans that were a nice juxtaposition.

    Is ‘Landman’ Worth Watching?

Critics were also kinder than some expected. Sitting at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus reads: “Landman plumbs much of the same territory as other Taylor Sheridan-penned series, but having Billy Bob Thornton on hand turns this Texas crude into highly watchable fuel.” The mix of skepticism and respect is fitting — the show’s exploration of oil and power doesn’t always land with the universal acclaim of 1883 or 1923, both Yellowstone prequels in their own right.

But Sheridan thrives on grinding these shows out as much as possible as much as he does prestige. Beyond Landman, his slate remains stacked. He’s got The Madison, The Dutton Ranch, and Y: Marshals on deck, while Tulsa King remains one of Paramount+’s biggest titles. And then there’s his cinematic work — from Sicario to Hell or High Water to Wind River — with his next film, F.A.S.T., starring Brandon Sklenar, LaKeith Stanfield, Julia Canfield, and Sam Claflin already in development.

If Landman’s temporary dip in the charts says anything, it’s that Sheridan’s audience has more to choose from than ever. With Season 2 due later this year, expect the show to roar back into the rankings once viewers return to see where Thornton and company steer this oil-soaked saga next.

Season 1 of Landman is now streaming on Paramount+. Season 2 returns next month.
